Hermione’s Everyday Socks

After knitting quite a few colorful socks in plain stockinette stitch. I went crazy 🙂 and cast on Hermione’s Every Day Socks by Erica Lueder.

Nachdem ich in dem letzten Wochen reichlich bunte Socken in glatt rechts gestrickt habe, wollte ich mal etwas ganz Verrücktes 🙂 ausprobieren und habe Hermione’s Every Day Socks von Erica Lueder angeschlagen.

I usually knit socks using magic loop and circular needles and work both socks concurrently. But my 2.5mm circular needles had been occupied with the fourth pair of Christmas socks so I knitted these on DPN’s. When working with DPN’s I prefer wooden or bamboo needles over metal, but I only had one pair of bamboo and one pair of metal DPN’s in that size.

Can you guess where this is going?! Yes, that’s right. Same number of stitches, same number of rounds, two different sized socks!

One probably can’t tell by the picture, but the sock in front is 1cm shorter at leg and foot than the other one in the back. The thing is, I finished the “bamboo sock” first and it did fit PERFECTLY. Best-fitting sock I have ever made for myself. Then I finished the “metal sock” and tried it on and my toes felt…, well, squeezed. In panic I counted the rounds again, how could this happen?! But the numbers were correct and it began to dawn on me that metal and bamboo needles can  absolutely cause a different gauge. Now I have to wear the smaller sock on my left foot, because it is slightly smaller the my right one and my toes have more space.

Normalerweise stricke ich Socken mit der Zauberschlingenmethode auf Rundstricknadeln und arbeite beide Socken gleichzeitig (allerdings nicht auf einer Nadel). Meine 2.5 mm Nadeln waren aber gerade mit dem vierten Paar Weihnachtssocken belegt, so dass ich das Nadelspiel benutzt habe. Wenn ich mit dem Nadelspiel stricke bevorzuge ich Bambus oder Holz. Aber ich habe in der 2.5 mm Stärke nur ein Bambus- und eine Metallspiel.

Ahnt ihr es schon?! Ja, genau. Die gleiche Anzahl an Maschen und Runden, aber zwei unterschiedlich große Socken.

Auf dem Foto ist es zwar nicht so gut zu erkennen, aber die vordere Socke ist an Bein und Fuß jeweils 1 cm kürzer als die hintere Socke. Die Socke vom Bambusspiel war zuerst fertig und sie hat wunderbar gepasst. Die bestsitzendste Socke, die ich jemals für mich gestrickt habe. Dann war die Socke vom Metallspiel fertig, also anprobiert und … oh, nein, irgendwie eng. In Panik habe ich noch einmal die Runden gezählt, aber alles hat gestimmt. Dann dämmerte es mir, dass Metall- und Bambusnadel unterschiedliche Maschenproben hervorbringen können. Nun muss ich die kleinere Socke am linken Fuß tragen, der ist ein bisschen kleiner als der rechte und die Socke zwickt nicht ganz so sehr.
